Support Elizabeth Warren for consumer watchdog job
Consumer, civil and human rights organizations wrote to President Obama on Aug. 9 to urge him to nominate Elizabeth Warren to serve as the first director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB).

Wisconsin payday loan cap gains support across state
Wisconsinites for Responsible Lending (WRL)—of which Consumer Action is a founding member—has announced the addition of new member organizations to its grassroots coalition.

Groups seek stronger mortgage reform bill
Consumer Action signed on to Congressional testimony that opposes current mortgage reform legislation (HR 1728). The bill would provide some needed protections to predatory lending, but would also replace stronger state laws with weaker federal protections.

Shareholders target predatory credit card practices
Consumer Action and the Center for Responsible Lending joined socially responsible MMA Praxis Mutual Funds and the Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility to discuss anti-consumer credit card practices that could have a negative impact on shareholders of major card issuers, and the larger economy.

Take a ride on the 'Road to Economic Recovery'
The National Community Reinvestment Coalition (Consumer Action is a member) and USAction are planning a massive week of action around the economic crisis.

Financial Education in the African American Community
Consumer Action attended the first Financial Literacy Roundtable focused on financial education in the black community. The roundtable was hosted by the Department of Treasury in March 2008.

Groups support Menendez credit card bill
U.S. Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ) was joined by consumer group representatives as he announced a sweeping plan to put an end to deceptive practices and irresponsible marketing by some credit card companies.

Patient control of health data
Consumer Action joined the Coalition for Patient Privacy to support HR 5442, authored by Congressman Ed Markey, which would give Americans stronger rights to to protect their most sensitive information on earth, their health records.

Seeking strong energy policies
Consumer Action is working in support of three measures that have already been passed by either the House or Senate earlier this year, including an increase in auto fuel economy standards, an increase in domestic production of bio-fuels, and an increase in renewable electricity by utilities.

FakeChecks.org: A new consumer anti-fraud resource
FakeChecks.org, a new web site and public awareness campaign, targets the most common variations on the growing problem of counterfeit and fake check fraud. It features frequently asked questions (FAQs), tests you can take to gauge your vulnerability, and humorous videos to with key messages.
